Maharashtra Foundation implemented its
own Bare Foot Doctors (Bharat Vaidya) in partnership with Halo Medical
Foundation
Bharat Vaidyas: Affordable and accesible healthcare
is often a luxury in rural India. The HALO Medical Foundation (HMF),
a registered public charitable trust working in Anadur, Maharashtra,
is striving to bring quality of healthcare to where it is needed
the most - Villages of India. Spearheaded by Drs. Mr & Mrs.
Ahankari, the organization implements a cariety of innovative and
practical programs.
Bharat Vaidya: A cadre of trained community health workers (primarily
women), who provide basic healthcare and health education at low
cost to the rural poor. Trained women treat over 75% of locally
prevalent diseases.The project trained additional Bharat Vaidyas
so as to cover larger geographic area. As leaders in the community,
Bharat Vaidyas are in unique position to motivate their fellow village
women to empower themselves economically through participation in
self help groups. To this end, they also arrange loan for income
generating activities such as dairy and animal husbandry projects,
and small business activities.
